The "Chicken Ranch" at Rasor Road
This old
cabin was build in the early 1900s as far as we can
tell. It has been a great spot to stop with the kids and
enjoy lunch while playing in the sand at Rasor Road.
Many of us have enjoyed this old cabin for many years.
When we first found it in about 1978 or so, it was in
pretty good shape. There is a little chicken coup off to
the right of it and this little structure had four
walls, a front door, a roof and a little cut out at the
bottom for your hands to get the eggs out of. It had
some salt cedar twigs in there that the chickens would
roost on, then drop their eggs onto a little pile of
sand and they would roll down and out the trap door. We
thought we would name her "The Chicken Ranch".... and
the name stuck!
Below are
the last photos taken before NPS put up the Rasor Road
Fence separating the BLM Rasor Road OHV area from the
NPS Devils Playground preserve. This area is now off
limits to OHV's and I am not sure if we can legally get
to it in a street legal vehicle due to the way they word
the law as "Travel on marked roads only". There is only
one road/trail that goes to it and the new fence put up
in October of 2011 cuts the road in half.
